Cliche but a Rule: Show, Don't Tell

As a writer, this rule is thrown around so often it has, in fact, become a cliche. But, it is still an important rule. I still have some problems with following it in my first drafts of what I am working on. A few months ago I was sitting down and rereading some of the old scattered scenes and drabbles that I have jotted down (some a few years old) and cringed. Last year I started going to school for creative writing and I am planning on going back in the nest few months. One lesson I learned while writing a Flash Fiction was the turning point to making my writing more immersive. We know what the characters are feeling and so do our readers. We don't want to 'preach' at them about what is going on with our characters. As writers, we want our readers to feel what is going on. The man sitting on the train reading about an angsty teen having problems with his parents? We want him to remember back to that rebellious stage of his life, to put himself in the place of the teen. ...

I know its been awhile since I decided to do any of this, but I've been feeling kind of lost. Nothing else was really helping me find myself, so this is what I have. We can see how this works. I really haven't been feeling any drive to write these last couple months but I want to make that as my first step into getting back to me. So here I am, griping to a screen and maybe hoping that this time, I can do better. I will do better. So, now that that depressing little tidbit is done, let's get on to something a little more entertaining, shall we? Well, at least not as much fo a downer as that. I started a new Discord server for all of this and I will provide a link below this wall of text for anyone interested in joining myself and others in our writing and just general goofing off. After all, a writer who is all work and no play gets very bland. I will also be starting a new short series of Flash Fictions this month that will come out once or twice a week, depending. I wil...
Have you ever...?

Have you ever just looked at everything you have, everything you have been through, everything you've done and have this weird bundle of emotions in your chest? Fights, laughter, tears, fears, losses, and gains...Everything that makes up our lives, every little thing just in a collage of memories, moments, and feelings. You just sit there and wonder "What the fuck did I do to deserve all of this crap?" Only concentrating on all the shit in your life, all the bad. Have you ever just sat down and wondered "What can I do to make everything ok?" I had one of those days. Just sitting there and feeling like complete crap for myself. And not just for myself, for my whole family. We always seem to get the shitty end of the stick that was stuck in the mud for the last three years. I was having a full on pity party for myself and trying to figure out how we were ever going to be able to get anything figured out. Then I looked over at my little sister, a thirteen year ...

I'm not sure what made me decide to do this, but here I am. How about of little bit of an introduction first? My name is Lystra Vess, but as we can be friends here, you can call me Lys. I'm a fantasy/horror writer with enough lighthearted banter to make the world swirls of grey. I have a three year old cat who is just as much detrimental to my writing as he inspires it (as anyone with a cat will know). I love any kind of music and read almost constantly. A couple years ago I fell in love with audio books and started dabbling a bit in reading some of my own work for people. I just recently started writing for a website called Vocal, which I will provide a link to if anyone is interested. I'm working on a collection of Flash Fictions following an ancient sorceress at the moment as well as a novel I hope to finish about a twist on our favorite witches and wizards' world monsters. Now that we have all the weird stuff out of the way, I guess I should explain what I am h...
